Haverford Renovation
The Haverford Renovation reimagines a stately 1937 Georgian-style brick home through a lens that is both respectful of tradition and confidently modern. Drawn to the residence’s classic Main Line façade but challenged by its disjointed layout and outdated interiors, the homeowners sought to create a home that felt more cohesive, welcoming, and tailored to contemporary family life while still preserving the architectural integrity of the original house.
At the entrance, the previously offset front door was relocated to the center of the façade to reinforce the home’s symmetrical form. This change created a more gracious and formal entry experience while making better use of the existing stair hall as the focal point of arrival. The former entry vestibule was transformed into a barrel-vaulted passage that enhances procession through the home.
One key focus of the renovation was reorganizing the home’s interior layout to resolve long-standing circulation challenges. Previously, movement through the home felt fragmented. Access to the basement, a key entertainment area for the family, was tucked into a narrow passage between formal rooms, while one of the primary routes to the upper bedrooms ran directly through the kitchen. The interior was carefully reworked to establish clear, intuitive connections between floors and across main living spaces, resulting in a home that flows naturally and supports the needs of a young family.
Within the renovated interior, a strong axial relationship now brings clarity to the formal entertaining rooms. A continuous sightline extends from the living room fireplace, through the stair hall, to the dining room fireplace beyond. This primary axis is reinforced by a cross axis that visually and physically connects the home’s principal gathering spaces, creating a newfound sense of balance and cohesion throughout.
The home’s Georgian character provided a clear stylistic framework for the renovation. The existing curved stair in the formal entry hall inspired the introduction of arched openings throughout the interior, a fundamental feature of Georgian design. These arches, paired with new, finely detailed millwork in the main living spaces, unify existing elements with a more modern sensibility.
Now complete, this renovation enhances daily life through a thoughtful balance of comfort and clarity. Thoughtfully layered interiors, enriched by new millwork and a neutral palette, create a living environment that feels simultaneously gracious and functional. The result is a home that supports the rhythms of modern-day family life while retaining the dignity and elegance of its Georgian origins.
